Big Cat Travel Insurance can cover mountain biking the Death Road when you select our Extreme Activity Pack. It's important to select the correct activity cover before taking part.
Yes! Big Cat Travel Insurance can cover mountain biking Bolivia's famous Death Road when you select our Extreme Activity Pack.
The Death Road – also known as the Yungas Road – starts high in the Bolivian Andes near La Paz at approximately 4,700 metres, before descending towards the subtropical Yungas region. Because the ride begins above 4,600 metres, you'll need to add our Extreme Activity Pack to your policy.
Mountain biking the Death Road takes you through remote, mountainous terrain where an accident or serious injury could require emergency medical treatment and evacuation. It's important to have travel insurance that covers both mountain biking and the altitude at which you're riding.
With Big Cat Travel Insurance and the Extreme Activity Pack, you'll have cover for emergency medical expenses and, where medically necessary, helicopter rescue and evacuation, subject to the terms and conditions of the policy.
Bolivia's Death Road is one of South America's most famous mountain biking adventures. The route combines dramatic mountain scenery, steep descents and changing landscapes as riders make their way from the high Andes towards the Yungas.
For many backpackers, the Death Road forms part of a much longer journey through Bolivia and South America. Big Cat policies can cover multi-country trips, making them suitable if Bolivia is just one stop on a backpacking or long-term adventure.
Whether you're travelling solely to Bolivia or continuing through Peru, Chile, Argentina and beyond, you can arrange one policy for your journey and add the activity cover you need for the adventures you have planned.
Because the ride begins above 4,600 metres, you'll need to add our Extreme Activity Pack to your policy. Once added, the Extreme Activity Pack applies for the full duration of your policy, so you can also use it for other covered Extreme activities during your trip.
*All cover is subject to the terms and conditions of the policy.
All persons to be insured must reside at a permanent address in the United Kingdom.
If you purchase cover after leaving the United Kingdom having started your trip, a 48-hour waiting period applies before your policy becomes active. For cover to be valid, the “Already Travelling” extension must be shown on your Booking Invoice or Validation Certificate. Illness that develops during this 48-hour period will not be covered, as it will be treated as a pre-existing medical condition. However, if you suffer a serious accident during this time, you’ll be covered straight away, provided it is independently witnessed and confirmed by a medical professional.
Please be aware that once you’ve started travelling,
the 14-day cooling-off period no longer applies and premiums are non-refundable.

Please ensure you arrange cover for the entire duration of your travel
Usually, this should be the date you leave the UK to begin your trip.
If you are not already travelling, eligible Standard and Premier policies also include Cancellation cover from the date you purchase your policy, even if your selected cover start date is later.
So, for example, if you buy your policy today but fly in two months’ time, you would normally select your departure date as the Cover Start Date.
That’s fine. If you are travelling without a fixed return date, simply enter your best estimate of when you expect your trip to end.
Our Single Trip policies can be extended while you are travelling, subject to the policy terms, so you do not have to return home on the date you originally select. If your plans change, you can extend your cover as you go.
Please note: If you need to claim under the Curtailment section of cover for return travel expenses to your home country, these can only be considered if you had a return journey booked before the circumstances giving rise to the claim.
The maximum allowable policy duration is 731 days. Please adjust your travel dates to proceed.
